When my daughter was a toddler, Firefighter mom most people never meet their heroes I raised mine shirt. She never wanted to be the last one to get out of the car, and if she thought for a moment that she was going to be, she’d cry hysterically. I’d be impatient and exasperated, more often than not. I remember feeling defensive inside, deciding I’d never done anything to cause this irrational fear. When all I really needed to do was acknowledge it, be patient with it, and say, I won’t leave you behind, sweet girl. I’d nearly forgotten my daughter used to do this. She’s in middle school now, hopping out of the car, going off on her own, and venturing into new territories without anyone beside her.

As she begins a new chapter in Firefighter mom most people never meet their heroes I raised mine shirt will surface that perhaps won’t make sense to me. This is the thing I’m learning about past mistakes and regrets. We all make them; we all have them. It’s just part of life and learning and growing. But if we can look back and reflect on them without judgment, we can redeem them. I wrote this reflection in my notebook a few weeks ago, not really sure if it would ever see the light of day. But then something happened yesterday to my sweet girl and the reflection came in handy. I’d picked her up from an activity and knew immediately that something was wrong.
