Of being an ethical company, and doing all kinds of awful things behind closed doors? Seen it. MacBooks are popular with US college students, but by no means universal. I think that roughly 10–20% of my students have them. They’re often older, hand-me-downs from parents, etc. MacBooks are particularly popular with computer science students because they’re exceptionally good computers, and don’t need to be replaced as often as Windows laptops. Still, unlike Windows laptops, there’s no low-cost, entry-level model (in the $600 range), so they’re not as popular. Wealthier students are more likely to have them, because they have (or at least come from) money.

Any person reviewing any application is LSU Tigers get the gat shirt? Are they exceptional, and if so, how? It’s very easy to read between the lines and see the person who did something, no matter how significant, in order to appear exceptional, or to bulk up an application. It’s very easy (and sadly rare) to see a candidate who stands out by virtue of following their own path, accomplishing truly amazing things in the process. You might think that a student who spends a couple of summers digging wells in Africa will stand out, and a student who gets involved in some after-school mentoring at the Boys and Girls Club will not. The activity itself is often irrelevant; it’s the context of the activity and its meaning to the person that are important. Summer classes are not particularly beneficial for most students. It can (at best) relieve a bit of pressure on you for a challenging semester, or it can help a student get back on track.
