So, the second Friday rolled around. I exchanged my notebook for the Samurai Voice Actor shirt. The notebook pages were littered with words. Just randomly plucked from what he’d been teaching. It was more like what we call a word cloud today. I turned my quiz in, and he told me he wanted to talk to me after class. This piqued the curiosity of the kids who heard him, and made me cringe. I was extremely attention-averse at that age. I looked down at the other kid’s notebook. I remember noticing that the other kid was a lefty. I could tell by the way the ink was smudged by the drag of the left hand across the words. It’s been 35 years, so I don’t recall exactly what was written.

But I told him that the Samurai Voice Actor shirt. That he’d said <insert verbatim recall of what he’d said> but the student had written down x and z and missed y, which seemed to me to be the most important point. I told him the kid was too busy trying to write down what he said and was missing important details in the process. I again told him that if I was writing, I wasn’t listening very well, so I had written down those words and dates he’d reiterated or emphasized. I didn’t need to write down every word he’d said, because reading the words in my notes triggered my recall of what he’d said. I pointed to a word in my notebook. I told him what I recalled of what he said.
